Livecaller is built with a privacy-first approach. In this article, we’ll answer common questions about what data Livecaller uses (and doesn’t use), how Live Caller ID lookups work securely, and how your personal information stays protected.
Does Livecaller collect my personal information?
No – Livecaller does not collect or require your personal info. You can use the app without signing up, and it does not upload your contacts or any identifiers like your phone number.
How do Caller ID lookups work without compromising privacy?
In short, Livecaller identifies callers without needing to know anything about you. Apple introduced a special system in iOS 18 for caller ID. Here’s a simplified explanation:
- When you get an incoming call, your iPhone uses a built-in process (through Apple’s network) to send a request to Livecaller’s servers asking “Who is this number?” This request is encrypted and relayed by Apple, meaning Livecaller’s servers don’t directly see your phone number or any info about you – they just get an encoded query.
- Livecaller’s server checks the number against our database and sends back an answer (the name or spam label) in encrypted form.
- Your iPhone then decrypts it and displays the info to you. Livecaller (the company) never learns who received the call, only that a certain spam number was queried. This preserves your privacy while still giving you the benefit of our database.
Do I need to create an account or share my phone number with Livecaller?
No account or phone number submission is needed. Many apps ask you to sign up with your phone number or email – Livecaller doesn’t. Just install it and enable it. Your phone number is not logged in a user database or anything.
We also do not require access to your social media or other personal accounts, which some services do for “enhancing” caller ID. Livecaller’s philosophy is to minimize data requirements.
Will other people see my name or number through Livecaller?
This is an important distinction:
- If someone else uses Livecaller (or a similar service) and your number calls them, the service might display a name associated with your number. How? Because Livecaller’s database contains public or community-sourced listings of numbers to names. For example, if your number is listed as “Alice Smith” in a public directory or if enough people have reported that number with your name, it could show up. This is not because you gave us that info; it’s likely because at some point your number was available via public records or was shared by others.
- Also note: Livecaller does not actively “trace” or expose any personal data beyond a name or business for a number. There are no addresses or other private details shown.
How does Livecaller make money if it’s free and not selling data?
A fair question! Livecaller is free and privacy-focused. We will offer additional paid premium features in future versions of Livecaller.
What permissions does Livecaller require on my iPhone?
Livecaller’s permissions are minimal:
- Call Identification & Blocking (System permission via the toggle): This allows the app to integrate with the Phone app for identifying/blocking calls.
- Notifications (Optional, but recommended): To let you know if a call was blocked or to send important alerts or tips.
- It does not request access to Contacts, Location, Photos, or other sensitive data. You can verify this by checking iOS Settings > Livecaller; you’ll typically only see Notifications permission there.
